A business plan describes a company's business type and goals, sales and marketing strategy, and financial background.  A business plan has traditionally been the vehicle for a start up to gain funding from venture capitalists, and remains so, but is often not the large comprehensive document that it once was expected to be. For start ups, developing a viable business model is more important than making many assumptions and forecasts in a business plan, which has led to the development of the business model canvas as a replacement for the traditional business plan.  Some form of business plan is essential for any business to be successful whether or not outside funding is sought.  A business plan helps to determine company focus and to maintain it, or highlight the need to change it. Finally, a business plan really is not about just filling in the blanks and generating a document. Rather it is about the analysis and planning, customer engagement, and creativity that are required to fill in the blanks with something meaningful.
